ZEN Sanctuary receives Congressional Certificate.

December 10, 2011

ZEN Sanctuary was honored to receive three awards for community involvement from Susan Davis, US Congress, Todd Gloria, San Diego City Councilmember, and Judy Elliot, Executive Director of the Adams Avenue Business Association.  The awards were given for "the most glitz for your storefront display" as part of the Avenue's effort to get businesses to show their Holiday Spirit.

The Plaza Kensington, where ZEN Sanctuary is located is dressed up in Candy Cane colors of white and red.  Palm trees are candy striped and architectural posts are dressed with green garland and red jeweled bells.  At the corner, Frosty is decked out in top hat and carrot nose and greets those who walk by.

ZEN Sanctuary's owner and founder, Chance Billmeyer, has been creating a brighter Kensington through lights, Holiday decorations, carolers, a 50 foot christmas tree, and Santa for the kids since 2003.  The Plaza Kensington has been home to pointsettias, moving reindeer, an annual tree lighting by Mayor Jerry Sanders and over 400 local residents over the last 9 years.

This year a goal was realized,  due to Darlene Love who worked with Parks & Recreation, to get the Holiday Tree at the corner of Marlborough and Adams electricity.  The tree sat for one year without power after Chance Billmeyer and Darlene Love worked to get six 75 foot strands of commercial LED lights strung on the tree.  The lights were paid for by members of the Kensington community and the Kensington Talmadge Business Association through Chance Billmeyer's fundraising efforts to raise over $1200.  Darlene Love has for the last year, worked with the city to obtain approval for the lighting of the tree, and to fund personally an electrician to come out and do the proper undergrounding and connection of electrical at the base of the tree.  Darlene Love remembers as a little girl when the tree was planted for the purpose of being a Holiday tree in Kensington.  On December 3, 2011 this became a reality again.
